Pentlands history revealed in landmark publications

THE battles, burial chambers, standing stones and Knights Templar estates in the Pentlands have been documented in two new publications.

The leaflet and map explain the names and their connection to historic events in the hills, which are also linked to literary luminaries such as Allan Ramsay, Sir Walter Scott and Robert Louis Stevenson.

The place names in the Pentlands chart 2500 years of linguistic history, including British, Gaelic and Scots, and fleetingly, early Northumbrian, Norman-French, Scandinavian and Latin. A brief Roman occupation is even revealed in some of the names.

The leaflet and map are funded by Scottish Natural Heritage, South Lanarkshire Council and LEADER, and produced by the Friends of the Pentlands. John Stirling, of the Friends of the Pentlands, said: “We wanted to provide something for everyone. There is so much more to the Pentlands than just the hills.”
