As we celebrate 150 years of the Edinburgh Evening News, we’ve taken a look at the 150 most famous faces from the Capital. In alphabetical order, we are going through these big names who have made an impact on Edinburgh and the world. We’ve already mentioned the likes of Arthur Conan Doyle and JK Rowling – so let’s have a look at the most influential Edinburgh people, from letters N to R.
5. Pat Stanton
Pat Stanton is a former football player and manager who is the great-great nephew of Hibernian FC founder Michael Whelahan. He played for Hibs throughout the 1960s and '70s, making almost 400 league appearances throughout his career. Patsy Mundie is a war hero who worked for the secret operations unit during the Second World War. She transmitted codes to agents and worked behind enemy lines - unable to tell anyone, even her family. She was awarded a service medal just six years ago, and celebrated her 100th birthday in Edinburgh last year. Photo: Submitted
7. Peter Higgs
Professor Peter Higgs is a Nobel prize winning theoretical physicist behind the discovery of the Higgs boson, or God particle. He was a research fellow and then lecturer at Edinburgh university for many years. And it is in Edinburgh where the professor first became interested in mass, and said he developed his theory after returning from to Edinburgh's New Town from a Highland trip. Photo: Peter Macdiarmid
8. Peter Sawkins
Peter Sawkins was the first Scot and the youngest ever winner of the Great British Bake Off. Aged just 20, Sawkins wowed Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith with his impressive gluten-free bakes in the 11th series of the show. He has gone on to release his first baking book, Peter Bakes.
