Appeal for veterans to take part in Edinburgh VE Day 75th anniversary parade

The event will honour the ‘service’ and ‘dedication’ of those who helped secure peace, including those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

War heroes from across Scotland will be offered free travel to and from Edinburgh as well as free accommodation in the capital.

The march will mark 75 years since Victory in Europe (VE) on May 8, followed by an open-air concert and RAF flypast in Princes Street Garden.

The parade will feature pipe bands, veterans, current personnel from the Armed Forces as well as horses, youth groups and vintage military vehicles.

The events were announced Veterans Minister Graeme Dey.

He said: “Although three-quarters of a century have passed since the end of World War Two, we must never forget the sacrifices made by those from across the Commonwealth and Allied nations.

“Their service allowed us to enjoy the freedoms and relative peace we now take for granted and it is important veterans of the War are central to these commemorations."

Communities across Scotland are being encouraged to host their own commemorative events, and schools will be provided with learning packs to help pupils understand the significance of VE Day.

Cllr Dey added: “We encourage communities from across Scotland to join us in what will be an inclusive, welcoming and poignant event.”

The event is being delivered in partnership with Legion Scotland, Poppyscotland and the Scottish Government who are providing over £50,000 to fund the events.

Chief executive of Legion Scotland Dr Claire Armstrong said: “It is a time for communities from across Scotland to join together in celebration and commemoration, and we want to ensure that those who sacrificed so much during the Second World War take centre stage.

“I therefore encourage applications from veterans and anyone else who directly contributed to the war effort.”
