The eight men turned on the 22-year-old barmaid at the Royal Oak after she refused them access, and set about causing damage to the pub, just after midnight on Monday, July 27.

Royal Oak manager Lisa Wynn said: “They came round the back of the pub as we close our front doors early. They were told it was too late to come in. We were still open as we have a late license, but at that point we shut the doors.

“I wasn’t here at the time but I was told it was quite scary. When the group of men were told they couldn’t come in a member of staff had to hold the gate while they tried to rip it off. There were around eight of them.

“They smashed the window round the side of the pub and ran away. Some of them got into a car and the others ran up the road.

“Our CCTV wasn’t working at the time so we are looking for anyone that seen anything or knows anything to come forward.

“We are currently getting the fence fixed and had to get the window replaced. It’s around £900 all together.”

This was the last thing the pub needed after lockdown. “We have been quite quiet since we re-opened as people are quite scared to come into pubs now, so this happening now is not the best,” said Lisa.

A Police Scotland spokesperson: “We received reports around 12.30am on July 27, of vandalism to a premises on Polton Street in Bonnyrigg. Enquiries are ongoing.”
