Midlothian Council leader Derek Milligan (Lab) has asked the council’s planning officer to investigate ways of protecting the county’s town centres.
While discussing appeals to the Scottish Government Reporter at the latest planning meeting, councillors welcomed the news that the reporter dismissed an appeal against a refusal of planning permission for the erection of a retail unit south west of Tesco Hardengreen.
Welcoming this decision Cllr Milligan asked planning chief Ian Johnson: “What actions can we take to protect town centres and what are going to do to protect them?
“Dobbies for example has suddenly developed into a great big centre and watch the restaurants and shops shutting in our town centres. What can we do to stop this?”
Mr Johnson agreed to give a full briefing to councillors before the next planning meeting.
