Tracey Radnall discovered the “antique” Golden Wonder packet while walking her dog on Tyninghame Beach in East Lothian.

She spotted the piece of litter in the sand and after collecting it she was shocked to see the ready salted crisps cost 6d - sixpence in the UK’s pre-decimal currency, about 35p today.

“A Golden Wonder crisp packet. The price 6D (sixpence) is still visible. So been in the sea since pre 1971.

“I’ve just filled it with water at home and apart from two tiny holes it’s holding.”

The journalist and designer added: “It’s a lesson to us all how plastic is such a threat to our seas.”
