Edinburgh granny shocked after daughter gives birth to baby boy - first in the family for over a century

An Edinburgh grandmother is in shock after her daughter gives birth to a boy, after over a century of just girls.

Justine Kay, 48, recalled how her family had only given birth to girls until her grandson was born two weeks ago.

Justine said: “My granny, my mum’s mum, was born in 1916 and her four brothers were all born before her.

“My grandma only had my mum, my mum only had me and I had my two daughters Rachael and Allanah and until a fortnight ago Rachael had only had one daughter, Lily.”

Justine’s first grandson, Cameron Alistair Girdler, was born on February 7 in Glenrothes, Fife to her daughter Rachael and son-in-law Ross.

Cameron is the first boy to be boy down his maternal line since his great grandmother’s brother in May 1910.

The overjoyed grandmother said: “We realised a while back that we kept having girls but no-one paid that much attention to it, until we found out about Cameron.

“We were gobsmacked, Rachel kept saying to the midwife ‘is it definitely a boy?’”

Speaking of the reason for the lack of boys in their family, Justine said: “We really don’t know. Nothing has been medically confirmed but we think we have been unable to carry boys.

“My granny had a miscarriage before she had my mum at 31-years-old, which was quite old back then, and I had a miscarriage before I had my daughters.

“Rachael had two miscarriages before she had my granddaughter Lily and my eldest daughter Allanah has had five.

“We were all absolutely convinced we were not able to carry boys but Rachel has now broken the curse.”
