So we asked our readers on the Edinburgh Evening News Facebook page how they marked the occasion while sticking to the Covid guidelines.
Some didn’t make it to midnight, but Christine Wooley made it her mission to see off 2020. “Don’t normally wait up for the bells,” she wrote, “however I’m waiting up this year to make sure this beast of a year has really gone”.

Jools Holland’s Hootenanny and a glass of wine was the plan for some, and others said they would be catching up with their family on Zoom.
Karen Finlay spent it at home with her husband. She said: “No party no visitors the way it should be.” Similarly Steven Ireland said he had a “nice and quiet” evening planned with his family.
Then there were those who had to work. Brenda Murray said: “I will be bringing the New year at work with all my work colleagues and patients.” Brenda, we salute you.

Hide AdWith the gallows humour spirit many of us had picked up in 2020, Louisa Collie wrote: “I intent to cry into my fridge, dressed in stale pyjamas, possibly with a single slipper on. I'd go to bed at 7pm but I want to stay up to shout jumanji.”
However, for others there was no reason to mark Hogmanay this time around. “What’s there to celebrate?” asked Thomas Mcilwraith.
But Louise Wilson responded: “Still being here? Many people have lost their lives to Covid, so celebrate that you are not one of them!”
How did you spend your Hogmanay?
