Focus on fitness at Loanhead school

Morning Warm Up with Nike
Morning Warm Up with Nike

Loanhead Primary held a Health Week recently and thanks to strong community links the children were able to gain new experiences and knowledge throughout the health and wellbeing curriculum.

Each morning the school day kicked off with a warm up to music involving the staff from the Nike store at Straiton Retail Park. There were taster sessions on basketball (Gav’s High Flyers Basketball Academy), football (SFA), rugby (Midlothian Rugby), dance (Upbeat dance), music and movement (Jo Jingles), and the whole school took part in a sponsored circuit session with Commonwealth gymnast Liam Davie.

The school welcomed in parents into class to teach about hand washing, sleep hygiene, nourishing food and foot health. Other areas covered include food safety, a mile a day, road safety, respect and bullying, cycle safety, living and growing and internetsocial media safety, and healthy picnics.

There was a ‘Bike Breakfast’ as part of the school’s I Bike focus. With the assistance of the Sustrans’ I Bike officer breakfast was provided for all 131 children who biked or scooted to school that morning. The sun was shining which allowed the children and families to enjoy their healthy breakfast in the playground. This was the second of a number of exciting activities the school has planned with Sustrans.

This was an extremely successful week for the school. Thanks go to all of the volunteers and health Ccoordinator Mrs Duncan.
