Frank 'Shaky' Walker, 57, was a popular figure on the Tynecastle terraces and was known for turning up at games wearing animal print onesies.

According to the Daily Record, friends said he had a history of blood clots and emphysema, dying the day after leaving hospital following a health scare.

A tribute from the Hearts official twitter account on Tuesday said: “We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Frank 'Shaky' Walker.

"His cheery demeanour and range of fantastic outfits made him a very popular figure at Tynecastle. He was a Jambo through and through.

"Our thoughts are with his friends and family."

Fellow Hearts supporter and owner of the Dickens Bar on Dalry Road, Callum Anderson, was a pal of Shaky’s for 30 years.

He told the Daily Record he was running a karaoke at a bar in Port Seton in 1990 when an “eccentric” DJ called Frank turned up with a variety of props including plastic flowers, tins of beans and masks. Mr Anderson said the pub “loved him” and that he would announce ‘Shaky, Shaky so good they named him twice.’

Mr Anderson described him as a “larger than life” character who had a knack for making people feel they knew him for much longer than they did, due to his friendly nature.

He also told the newspaper that Shaky lost his husband, Jimmy Boyce, three years ago and missed him “terribly,” and that he had two grown-up daughters from a previous relationship.

Many Hearts fans have been taking to social media to pay tributes as maroon coloured scarves, as well as flowers and cards, were left outside of Tynecastle.

A message on a Hearts football top outside the ground read: "RIP Shaky, forever in our Hearts. True legend."

Another message on flowers there described him as the "Best Jambo, Shaky."
