Midlothian Matters: Community puts its faith in trust

I spent a week working at Rosewell Development Trust on a work experience placement. It gave me a good opportunity to see what the trust does and write this article on its work, writes Alice Palfreyman.

Rosewell Development Trust (RDT) is an exciting, community focused organisation which offers endless opportunities for the people of Rosewell to develop their skills, engage in their community and volunteer. The team at RDT works hard to deliver and run projects for the whole village to get involved in.

With clubs, activities and projects, RDT works to bring people together. A key project is the Community Hub which it is working to deliver to the village. The Hub will include office space, a community café, space for a pop-up community cinema, soft play and a place for events and activities to provide social opportunities for all. RDT also provides training, volunteer opportunities and apprenticeships for the people of Rosewell to access and enhance their skills. The volunteers involved with RDT projects and events (around 40 volunteers are involved in the trust on a regular basis) make up a group of dedicated helpers who work hard to plan, develop and deliver lots of opportunities, community projects and events.

The trust has given the people of Rosewell access to skill development and training, such as its popular first aid courses and woodland projects.

Opportunities are created for people through partnerships it has with local businesses and, due to this, it has managed to support over 15 local young people into apprenticeships.

What RDT does is bring all of the community together, reduce isolation, and create safe environments for the children, families and older people in Rosewell.

While I was on my work experience post at RDT in September, it was clear that the people in Rosewell are very involved in their community and like to get stuck into the things going on with the development trust. Rosewell is expanding quickly and RDT is working hard to ensure the mixture of old and new residents have lots of things to do.
