Midlothian Growing Together is calling on everyone to lend a hand to improve their local environment, and get involved in their forthcoming “Action Earth” project, writes Katrina Dunlop.
Delivered by Volunteer Midlothian, Midlothian Growing Together is a community gardening project that aims to promote health and wellbeing, development of social and practical skills, community belonging and environmental sustainability through volunteering.
Through Action Earth Funding, the project aims to involve local volunteers in providing water and food sources for birds and bees in our community garden within Dalkeith Country Park. We hope to create a bird bath and some bird feeding stations using recycled materials, and fill the surrounding area with plants to attract birds and bees.
Action Earth is a campaign organised by the national charity Volunteering Matters (formerly known as CSV), and funded by Scottish Natural Heritage.
This is the second bit of good news for the Midlothian Growing Together project, which also received an award from Keep Scotland Beautiful recently. The project was awarded “thriving” status from the “It’s Your Neighbourhood” Scheme which rates community projects on their community participation, environmental responsibility and gardening achievement.
It’s testament to the hard work of our volunteers that we were able to be awarded “thriving” for the second year running. As well as maintaining all aspects of the garden, the volunteers also help out at our regular garden events that the whole community are invited to.
Anyone can get involved with the project. We have volunteering sessions on Fridays from 11am-1pm and 1.30-3.30pm. We provide all the tools, equipment and materials needed. The sessions are relaxed and we always make time for a tea break and wee chat halfway through.
