Midlothian MP praises local efforts to beat the coronavirus
Owen Thompson MP has praised the outstanding efforts of a local school and businesses in Midlothian who are working to produce much-needed safety equipment for NHS and care staff.
Newbattle Community High School has made use of the school’s 3D printing resources to develop much-needed face shields, led by Technologies Principal Teacher Mr Hay.
The Midlothian MP has also been in touch with a local plastics company in Loanhead, McLaren Plastics Ltd, which has a prototype face shield prepared, moulding machines ready to go and the capabilities to help with mass production of the shields.
Space technology company Skyrora is also involved in the fight against COVID-19, currently using their resources to produce batches of hand sanitiser to World Health Organisation (WHO) guidelines and standards.
Mr Thompson (SNP) said: “In an emergency like this it’s important we use our collective skills to support and protect those working on the frontline. Midlothian is brimming with talent in the fields of science, engineering and technology so it’s fantastic to see it being used to help fight Covid-19.
“Hats off to the team at Newbattle Community High School who have made innovative use of the school’s 3D printing resources to get face shields out for carers and NHS staff.
“Then there are companies like Mclaren plastics in Loanhead who are prepared and ready to help with mass production of face shields.
“Midlothian-based space technology company Skyrora have also been proving they are not all about rocket science. They’ve used their oxidiser to produce hand sanitiser, with batches tested and ready to distribute wherever needed.
“While it’s always important safety regulations are met, we have to make sure we can reduce the obstacles to get the equipment approved as quickly as possible and out to those who desperately need it on the frontline.
“I have also been contacted by self-employed couriers who are ready and willing to help get things shipped. It’s great to see so many people willing to help.
“This is a massive team effort and I’m proud of the work being done by team Midlothian. I stand ready to help in any way I can.”
