Midlothian MSP calls for people to get on board with free bus travel consultation
Local SNP MSP Christine Grahame has encouraged people to take part in a consultation launched by The Scottish Government on proposals for free bus travel for young people aged under 19.
She said: “With approximately 770,000 young people anticipated to benefit, these proposals could make a huge difference and get more young people using public transport. Free bus travel will help young people under the age of 19 to access education, employment and leisure and will make a particular difference to those from lower income families.
“Young people have been particularly badly hit by the consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic, both in education and jobs, and it’s hoped these proposals will go some way to reducing inequalities, tackling poverty and promoting opportunity.
“I’m confident that the proposal would support the independence of young people and encourage a greater, long term shift to more sustainable travel – largely by encouraging the use of public transport from an early age – which can only benefit our response to the climate emergency.
“I’d encourage as many people as possible to complete the online consultation on this to ensure the government understands the publics views and experiences around this.”
