Jane Hyslop created Mappa Midlothian while studying at Edinburgh College of Art.
The complex linocut print was exhibited in her final year degree show in 1989. Its title refers to the Hereford Mappa Mundi, a 13th century map of the world that includes images of natural creatures and biblical events, as well as medieval towns and cities.
Likewise, Mappa Midlothian provides more than a simple geographical interpretation of the land. It documents the Midlothian area from a social and industrial perspective.
Mappa Midlothian goes on display at the City Art Centre, Edinburgh, in the exhibition Paper Trail: Drawings, Watercolours, Prints (July 2, 2016 – May 21, 2017).
We’d love to feature your favourite Midlothian object.
