Probus Club

Penicuik and District Probus Club meets in St James the Less Church Hall, Broomhill Road, Penicuik, from 2pm. The subject of today’s talk will be ‘In Flanders Field’. All welcome.

Armistice Concert

Local historian John Duncan joins Newtongrange Silver Band in an Armistice Concert at National Mining Museum Scotland, commemorating 100 years since the end of the Great War. As well as up-beat music relating to the wars there will be a moment of solemn remembrance. Come and join the band in what promises to be a memorable concert.

Saturday, November 10

Winter warmer

A Christmas fair will be held in the Scout Hall, Hunterfield Road, Gorebridge, from 10am to 3pm. There will be craft and other local businesses selling wares including jewellery, Christmas decorations and hampers.

Sunday, November 11

Lest we forget

The Battle’s Over - A Nation’s Tribute. To mark the centenary of the end of the First World War, a service of Thanksgiving for Peace will be held at Crichton Church at 6.45pm. The service will be conducted by the Rev Dale London. All welcome. More information at www.crichtonchurch.com. The church is situated two miles from Pathhead (Sat nav EH37 5XA)

Gorebridge Gala Day Committee AGM, 7.30pm at Gorebridge Leisure Centre.

Heritage society

Roslin Heritage Society meets in Roslin Pavilion at 7.30pm. Ruth Boreham will give a talk on the ‘History of the Usher Hall’. All welcome.

Tuesday, November 13

World history

Midlothian World History Society meets in the church hall of St Nicholas Buccleuch Church, 119 High Street, Dalkeith, at 7.30pm. Guest speaker Dr David Kaufman of Edinburgh University, will deliver the talk, ‘Making Germany Pay – Reparations after the First World War’. Meetings are held on the second Tuesday of each month from September to April, with specialist guest speakers providing fascinating insights into a wide range of topics. Admission is free, there is no obligation to join the society and refreshments are served. Everyone with an interest in history is welcome to attend.

In concert

Alan Reid, best known for his 40 years with the Battlefield Band, will be performing at Penicuik Folk Club. The concert takes place at Shottstown Miners’ Club, Penicuik, at 8pm.
