A new Lesbian Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) youth space at the Penicuik YMCA-YWCA has been launched.

It has been operating as a pilot but will meet regularly on Tuesdays from 6.45-8pm from October 25.

Penicuik YMCA-YWCA, at Queensway, wants to build and promote a resilient LGBT youth community whose members and friends and allies are not discriminated against. The aim is to create a safe space were LGBT young people are formed and empowered. To do this the ‘Y’ will combine formative activities, including workshops and leisure time to know each other better and have a good time.

Penicuik YMCA-YWCA youth development worker Alba Rozalén said: “This is an exciting opportunity for our community. Unfortunately, there are not many spaces and activities designed to meet the needs of our young LGBT in the area. That is the reason why from the ‘Y’ we want to claim and promote a more inclusive society by creating a space where LGBT young people and allies can gather together and enjoy a variety of opportunities that we have to offer here.”

High school children, aged between S2 to S6, identifying themselves as a member of the LGBT and allies community and/or just wanting to come along to meet new people, should contact 01968 674851 or email
