Newtongrange family devastated after cat shaken to death by dog

Teegan Trimmer found her cat’s body in the bushes outside her home at around 8pm on Sunday, April 26. The family later found out by checking their CCTV footage that Binx was chased by the dog, which was off its lead, and shaken to death at around 1pm that day.

Carer Teegan lives with her husband Jamie and their three other cats and a dog. She spoke of her shock at Binx’s brutal death: “To say we are devastated doesn’t really cut it. We have lost animals before but never in such horrendous circumstances.

“He was just two and a half years old, and the sweetest boy, who loved being outside and coming onto your lap for cuddles after a long day of doing cat things.

“He had the loudest purr I think we have ever heard in our life. We adopted him along with his sister from a cat rescue about two years ago.

“To some he was just a cat, but to us he was a huge part of our family and our lives.

“To think that he passed alone, scared and in pain is something I do not think I will ever come to terms with.

“I battle with depression and have PTSD. I have been managing my mental health relatively well as of late but my world no longer feels like a safe place.

“I don’t want to step outside my front door as I can not face looking into the bushes where we found him or seeing the dog in question again, as it stays in the next street over.”

Teegan revealed she has spoken to the dog’s owners.

She said: “I don’t blame the dog but I do blame the owners for being so irresponsible and not keeping their dog under control.

“I have spoken to the dog’s owners and they were completely oblivious to what had happened. The CCTV footage shows that by the time they caught up with their dog the mauling had occurred and was over. They were completely unaware of what had happened just minutes prior as they walked past the bushes where he lay.

“When we told them what had happened they were totally shocked and couldn’t understand how their dog could be capable of such a thing.

“I don’t think they understand the hurt that has been caused by their irresponsible actions.

“I love dogs and I understand they have an instinct to chase cats, but I feel like the owner should take reasonable action to prevent such incidents from happening.

“The dog’s owners have now said they will no longer walk their dog off-lead. It won’t bring our boy back, but I hope it will prevent this from happening to another family as I wouldn’t wish this pain on my worst enemy.”
