The postmistress at Newtongrange Post Office has broken her silence following local outcry at its closure, blaming bosses for the ongoing issue.

As reported in the Advertiser, the Main Street branch was closed until further notice with no explanation given and head office claimed it was outwith its control.

Now postmistress Amber Ahmed has hit back, claiming she too has been left in the dark, with the branch closed by her bosses who have simply told her it is closed for an audit, with no idea as to when it will re-open.

Speaking at last week’s Newtongrange Community Council meeting, Amber, who is supposed to be on maternity leave but has found herself working due to a lack of cover, said: “I have no understanding as to why they have closed it, I have been going round and round in circles.

“I am getting some legal advice as something has to be done, we are just really fed up. Post Office Limited have closed the branch without any prior knowledge.

“God knows how many times I have contacted them. It has been two weeks since it closed and I have still not had an explanation as to why.

“They are not thinking about pensioners, they are not thinking about the public.

“It’s sad for me, I took it on in 2013 with a positive vibe but it’s all gone downhill. I love working in there, I love the customers, but right now I just don’t know what to do.”

Amber explained that the on-going building work in the post office was to move Newton Stores into the unit from three doors down, but added that this was nothing to do with the closure.

A Post Office Spokesperson said: “We would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused by the continued temporary closure. We are working hard to restore the service as soon as possible and are committed to maintaining services in the area. In the meantime, customers can access Post Office services at Hunterfield Post Office and Mayfield Post Office.”
