An Aberdeen Coastguard spokesman advised anyone visiting the island tonight to check the tide times and stay safe as the tide can turn and cover the causeway quickly.

The images, taken just before 6:30pm, were shared on social media along with a caption which read: "People clearly ignoring that the Cramond Island causeway has been closed despite obvious signs."

On their website, Edinburgh City Council say that access to Cramond Island has been denied for ‘the safety of the public” and it will be closed “until further notice”. It is unclear when the barriers will be removed.

The coastguard spokesman confirmed there have been no rescue callouts for anyone stranded on Cramond Island in recent days.

But the Evening News reported last Friday how the coastguard were called to a third incident in the space of a week, when a 10-year-old boy was seen struggling in water near the island. A Coastguard helicopter and a lifeboats were dispatched to save the 10-year-old boy, but were stood down when it emerged that he had made it safely to land.

Earlier last week, the coastguard saved two people and two dogs from the waters off Cramond and rescued another three people who were cut off.

The coastguard and ambulance service were also called to Cramond Island on June 3rd to treat a woman with a suspected knee injury.

The current Scottish Government guidance allows people to leave home to exercise locally, as well as for essential reasons like buying food and accessing medical care.
