Website Just Jared tweeted: ‘Who should play James Bond next? Only two days left to vote in our poll, and @SamHeughan has a massive lead right now’.

Heughan, 40, retweeted the post, adding a winking emoji.

The Balmaclellan-born actor revealed recently he has actually tried out for the part before.

Speaking to the Radio Times, Heughan recalled auditioning for the part in October 2005.

“I met [producer] Barbara Broccoli and [Casino Royale director] Martin Campbell,” he said.

“I did a scene and they had the gun from The Man with the Golden Gun on the table and I remember thinking, ‘Wow, this is incredible’.

“It was surreal,” he added. “He’s a character we’ve all grown up with.”

In another recent interview, to promote latest film SAS: Red Notice, in which he plays special forces operator Tom Buckingham, Heughan admitted he’d jump at the chance to play Bond.

Speaking to the Press Association, he said: “I don’t know if there is a conversation being had, apart from in the media.
