There’s lots to do in Midlothian this autumn

Summer may be officially over but there is still plenty to do in Midlothian, writes Ian Gardner (Midlothian Tourism Forum).

From castles to concerts and outdoor cinema to science, there’s no shortage of things to keep everyone busy over the coming weeks.

Cousland Smiddy will hold an open day on September 24, which is a great opportunity to explore one of the area’s hidden gems. The Smiddy gives visitors a fascinating glimpse into the village's heritage, with an early 18th century blacksmith’s workshop and Victorian cottage housing the Heritage Hub.

One of Midlothian’s other heritage attractions, Rosslyn Chapel, will be the venue for outdoor cinema screenings of the Da Vinci Code, the Hollywood blockbuster in which the chapel is a key location, on September 23 and 24. Attendees are invited to pack a picnic and bring a rug or garden chair as no seating will be provided!

The end of September is the last chance to visit Crichton Castle this year. The impressive former seat of the Earls of Bothwell is open to visitors daily until September 30.

Autumn is a great time to explore the great outdoors in Midlothian and the ‘wonderful woodland’ walk, at Dalkeith Country Park, on October 2, is a fitting way to start the month. If that seems too tame, then the Country Park's Bushcraft Survival Day Course, on October 8 might be better! The day will cover topics such as wild food, flora and fauna, improvised shelters, water procurement, cutting techniques, and fire making. October also sees the Midlothian Science Festival, with events across various sites from the 8th to 22nd. Pick up their brochure or check online for details of numerous events taking place making the Festival better than ever.

Looking further ahead, there’s music at Dalhousie Castle in November, thanks to the Northumbrian Music Festival on Tour. You can enjoy a Grand Opera Gala on 11th and the sound of three English tenors on November 12.
