The Scottish SPCA is in search of homes for eight cornsnakes in the care of their Edinburgh Animal Rescue and Rehoming Centre.

Scotland’s animal welfare charity is asking people to consider making room in their heart and home for a scaly companion.

Diane Aitcheson, manager of the centre said, “We are looking for homes for Stu, Steve, Scout, Smith, Grace, Scorch, Coto and Clarence.

“The snakes in our care are sometimes overlooked as, generally, people come to the centre looking for a furry companion.

“Poor Clarence is our longest serving reptile resident having spent almost 1,300 days in our care. He’s feisty and a fussy eater, so he’s looking for an experienced owner who can monitor his weight.

“Coto has also been at the centre for a long time and has been with us for over 600 days. He arrived fairly underweight but is now ready for a new home. He’s friendly and happy to be handled.

“Smith is a newer arrival to the centre. He’s a juvenile and, like all young snakes, can be wary of being handled. However, with time and regular human interaction, there’s no reason he couldn’t become a great pet.

“Scorch was found as a stray with an injury which sadly resulted in him having the tip of his tail amputated. This hasn’t held him back and he’s incredibly friendly, happily slithering in and out of your fingers before resting over your arm.

“Stu, Steve, Scout and Grace are also friendly, well-handled snakes who would make fantastic first snakes for someone who has done their research.

“Anyone looking to rehome one of the cornsnakes must have the correct set up. We’re looking for homes that have knowledge of, or an interest in, snake husbandry. And, of course, our staff are always happy to give advice and support to new owners, especially if it’s their first time owning a reptile.

“All of these snakes could make brilliant companions for the right owner. We always say rescue pets make great pets and these cornsnakes are no exception.”

Anyone who is interested in rehoming any of the snakes should contact the Scottish SPCA’s centre in Edinburgh on 03000 999 999.
