Robert MacRae, 28, took to Twitter to share the short clip where you can hear the loud cracking noises as the thundersnow boomed over the capital.

Mr MacRae lives near the shore in Leith and said he wasn’t woken by the first boom but heard the second one and “thought it was a bomb going off”.

He told the Evening News: “It sounded like the 1 o’clock gun but only if you were standing right next to the cannon while it went off.”

His flatmate heard the first round of thundersnow but said that the second was ten times louder.

Mr MacRae wasn’t able to get back to sleep and said “by looking at twitter, neither could the majority of people in Edinburgh.”
