As he reached the tennis courts one of the youths jumped in front of the man and threatened him before demanding he hand over his money. The victim refused and made off across Buccleuch Street, through Gifford Park and onto Clerk Street.

Police are now keen to trace the youths and urge anyone who can assist with their enquiry to come forward.

Both are described as white, between 14 and 16-years-old, around 5ft 8ins tall and of slight build.

One was wearing a grey Addidas hooded top and jogging bottoms.

A police spokesman said: “The victim was uninjured during this incident and successfully fled the suspects before they could rob him of his possessions. “Nevertheless this was an unpleasant experience for him and we are now conducting local enquiries in and around the Meadows to trace those responsible.

“Anyone who was in the area yesterday evening and remembers seeing anything suspicious, or who recognises the description of the youths is asked to contact police on 0131 311 3131 immediately.”
