Police trio’s run honours hospice pal

POLICE officers in Midlothian have pledged to complete a gruelling 130-mile cycle ride to raise cash for Edinburgh’s St Columba’s Hospice.

Constable Donald Kettrick, from Bonnyrigg, will join detective constables Jamie Gilmore and David Riddell, both from Dalkeith, in attempting the 16-hour journey from Glasgow to Dunbar, via the Lammermuir Hills, next Saturday.

They hope to raise funds for the hospice after being impressed by the level of service they provided to a terminally-ill friend.

David said: “My good friend Ted Cartwright sadly passed away in 2009.

“However, the staff at St Columba’s were tremendous with him, and he was given the freedom and dignity to spend the last few weeks of his life in the way he wanted to without the normal restrictions of a hospital setting.

“It was obviously a very difficult time for him and his family, but the wonderful way he was treated went a long way in making it easier.

“I was so impressed at the work they do at St Columba’s and wanted to do something to show my appreciation.”
