16-year-old votes row

Former Scottish Secretary Lord Forsyth of Drumlean has attacked reports that 16-year-olds will be allowed to vote in the Scottish referendum.

He said the issue had huge implications and should not be decided in “closed corner negotiations”.

Lord Forsyth said: “If the franchise is to be extended for the referendum in Scotland, is it not inevitable that we will have to extend it to 16-year-olds in all directions throughout the United Kingdom.”
