Friends groups have library role, says Munro

A series of “friends” groups should be set up for the Capital’s libraries, according to a city councillor.

Councillor Gordon Munro, culture and leisure spokesman for the Labour group on the council, suggested the measure in his formal response to the consultation on the city’s new libraries strategy.

Friends groups are already a success for parks and gardens, and Cllr Munro believes they could have an important role to play for libraries.

In his response on behalf of the Labour group on the council, he said: “The formation of ‘friends of’ groups for libraries would be the best way to do this rather than using scarce resources for a ‘next generation’ brand.

“Other council departments such as schools could play a significant role in making this happen.”
