Midlothian East councillor Kenneth-James Baird (SNP).

Confirming the by-election plans on Monday, the returning officer, Midlothian Council chief executive Dr Grace Vickers, said: “We will be publishing an election notice in the coming days confirming more details, including the date.

“Please be assured we will be taking all precautions to make sure local people in the ward can vote as safely as possible.

“I will also be urging those who can’t or would prefer not to vote in person on the day to apply for a postal or proxy vote.”

The two remaining Midlothian East councillors are Cllr John Hackett (Lab) and Cllr Peter Smaill (Con).

You can register to vote online by going to: www.gov.uk/register-to-vote. Alternatively, you can also register to vote or apply for a postal or proxy vote by contacting the Electoral Registration Office at the Lothian Valuation Joint Board.

A proxy vote is when you appoint someone you trust to cast your vote for you either in person or by post. You can contact the Electoral Registration Office at: www.lothian-vjb.gov.uk or by phone on 0131 344 2500
