MSP Colin Beattie has slammed “politically motivated” questions about his wife’s absence from her councillor duties, due to ill health.
Councillor Lisa Beattie (SNP), who represents Midlothian East, has not attended any Mayfield Community Council meetings this year, which led people to question her role at the group’s latest meeting.
One member of the public said: “If she has got issues she should maybe be considering her position as a councillor.
“She hasn’t represented us as a community for a year or maybe longer. But she was campaigning for the referendum and she was out drumming up SNP membership.”
Midlothian North MSP Colin Beattie defended his wife who is currently having a phased return to work “under medical orders”.
He said: “Raising a personal health issue is clearly politically motivated due to the by-election [on November 27].The attack is so at odds with the extraordinary kindness expressed by so many constituents wishing her well throughout the past few months that it is impossible to see this in any other way.
“There is a danger that the publicity arising from the attack will be a setback to her recovery.”
