Midlothian South candidates: Dominic Ashmole, Greens - Scottish Parliament elections 2021
I am a fan of science and technology. I spent years at a healthcare technology company, working on Artificial Intelligence software for cancer and stroke diagnosis.
Throughout this pandemic, we have seen the power of our country’s science base. The roll-out of testing and vaccines has been impressive. But the pandemic tells another story too – of warnings ignored and preparations not made. We should have had a better plan.
Scientists have warned for decades that we’re heading for climate and ecological breakdown. Yet greenhouse gas levels relentlessly rise and our forests and oceans continue in dangerous decline.
Experts are practically weeping as they watch this unravelling accelerate, with no believable action plan from policymakers.
The Scottish Greens recognise technology will play a huge part in saving us. Our co-leader Lorna Slater is a tidal power engineer, and our £10bn Green Recovery programme will fund thousands of high-quality jobs in renewables.
We’ll invest in warm homes – upgrading insulation and heating systems. We plan radical improvements to rail, bus and active travel, and have already won free bus travel for under-22s. And we’ll repair nature, dramatically accelerating the initiatives already begun by rural businesses and charities.
These solutions are not high-tech, not “sexy” and won’t generate windfalls for a rich elite. But they’re effective, labour-intensive, local, and fair. This election is our chance to tackle the climate emergency, to build a fairer Scotland, and to secure our future as an independent country. Please vote like our future depends on it. Vote Green.
