'Trump instigated this' - Our readers react to dramatic scenes showing rioters storming the US Capitol building

Dramatic scenes showing pro-Trump rioters storming barricades on Capitol Hill as the Senate was certifying Joe Biden’s election win have been streamed across the Atlantic this evening.

Trump had earlier been criticised for inciting his followers to oppose the election result by peddling misinformation surrounding Joe Biden’s victory late last year in a speech.Edinburgh readers reacted with shock and disbelief at the unfolding events in the US.

Henry Bishop, who just became a US citizen before the recent election, said: “I am heart broken. I am Edinburgh born and raised and just became a US citizen so I could vote Trump out! This is not the America I call home.”

Fiona McFarland also laid the blame at Trump’s feet. She said: “Trump instigated this he should be arrested! Get the army in.”

Robert Lambert felt that the scenes seen today were inevitable, he said: “Well after four years of brainwashing his so called supporters they have finally cracked! What a disgrace Trump has been and no wonder America is in the mess it is!”Having seen his speech earlier today, Greg Markham said: “Saw his speech on the news earlier and I said then it sounded more like him telling them to do something like that. Disgusting.”

Graham Meighan said the President should show some evidence for his claims, he said: “Trump claims the election was stolen but as far as I’m aware has provided no evidence of any wrongdoing, the phrase put up or shut up springs to mind.”

Others noted that Trump was acting like a bad loser with Jacqueline Brannan saying: “Trump has caused all this, he’s such a bad loser, and I hope he never gets into Scotland.”

Fiona McFarland also laid the blame at Trump’s feet, she said: “Trump instigated this he should be arrested! Get the army in.”Millie O’neil was concerned, she said: “Makes a person very worried that this would happen here…”

Whilst J Forbes Shedden, said: “America as the beacon of democracy looks very weak after this.”

Noting that we are in the middle of a pandemic, Stu Laing said: “It makes you sick folk carrying on like this when there is a virus killing people - blame trump for all of those things going on.”
