Project’s decade of handing youngsters sporting chance

A PROJECT that encourages young people to take part in sport in order to steer them away from crime is celebrating its tenth anniversary.

The Open All Hours project, which has been supporting young people in Edinburgh to make positive life choices through physical activity, is marking ten years of existence this week.

Delivered in partnership between Edinburgh Leisure, the city council and the voluntary organisations FABB and Cafe K, the programme aims to provide secondary school-aged people with fully inclusive access to facilities including gyms, swimming pools, dance sessions and team sports for just £1 per session.

The programme has generated more than 70,000 visits to ten Edinburgh Leisure-operated venues across the city since it began in 2001.

Edinburgh Leisure’s children and young people manager Tommy George said: “Open All Hours is a real success story.”
