Pupils flood to Bonnyrigg project

More than 1,500 willow trees have been planted by schoolchildren at a Bonnyrigg park.

The effort was organised by local resident Darius Namdaran (42), whose cunning plan to improve water logged sports pitches came to fruition earlier this month.

As previously reported in the Advertiser, Darius planned to involve at least 200 local primary school children in the creation of a ‘community willow bed’ at King George V Park.

But the event surpassed his wildest expectations when around 600 youngsters attended over a two-day period.

Joined by Green Party councillor Ian Baxter, pupils from Hawthornden, Burnbrae, St Mary’s, Bonnyrigg and Lasswade primary schools took part.

As well as helping to reduce water logging, the trees will be used for craft activities.
