A Penicuik-based army officer is to receive an OBE in recognition of his work to support the African Union Mission in Somalia.

Lieutenant Colonel Graeme Wearmouth of The Royal Highland Fusiliers, 2nd Battalion The Royal Regiment of Scotland (2 SCOTS), and his team of nine were deployed to join the AMISOM in 2013.

The mission was formed to defeat the Al Shabaab’s violent and prolonged insurgency campaign.

His citation reads: “In extremely dangerous, isolated, complicated and challenging conditions, his personal and team outputs far exceeded his rank, team size and Permanent Joint Headquarters expectations. Wearmouth’s contribution to the mission was extraordinary and he is fully deserving in the strongest terms, of the highest formal recognition.”

Meanwhile, Major Gary Tait, also 2SCOTS, is to be awarded the Queen’s Commendation for Valuable Service. He was the manoeuvre battlegroup logistics officer and quartermaster during his eight-month tour in Afghanistan, overseeing the closure of two complex bases.
