Review puts Midlothian Council lets in doubt

A community council claims it was offered a changing room as a venue for its meetings as part of a council cost-cutting drive.

Midlothian Council is looking to cut back on evening janitorial cover at its buidlings and is reviewing its primary school lets to community groups to make financial savings.

The move could see organisations, including community councils, having to find new venues for evening and weekend meetings as some buildings will no longer be available.

Chairman of Mayfield and Easthouses Community Council, which currently meets in Mayfield Combined School, Robert Hogg said: “We are getting kicked out.

“This school was set up in the ’60s as a community facility and the community council has always operated in this school.

“The council has offered us Lawfield or Newbattle High School. They even offered us a changing room down at the complex!

“Although we may not like it, we are forced to go elsewhere.”
