Councillors were this week given the reported road accident statistics for Midlothian during 2011.
The report by John Blair, director of corporate resources, showed that last year there were three people killed, 26 seriously injured, and 190 slightly injured – a total of 219 casualties. This included four children seriously injured and 20 children slightly injured. A significant change in 2011 was the reduction in reported slight casualties to 190 from 234 in 2010. The cost of road accidents in Midlothian in 2011 was estimated at £10.5 - £12million.
To reduce casualty levels to those set for 2020 would result in combined savings of £3.5 million per year.
