Ben Fogle’s New Lives in the Wild

Channel 5, Friday, 9pm

Ben Fogle returns for a new run of the series that see him meeting the people who have turned their back on the rat race to start again in some of the most remote and occasionally dangerous places on Earth.

Over the next few weeks, he’ll be encountering the brothers who journeyed into America’s Wild West, and a Brit who has taken up dog mushing in the Swedish Arctic. However, the first episode finds him in Africa to talk to 50-year-old Gideon David, who swapped life as an insurance salesman for the existence of a master bushman in the Namibian desert, the largest conservation area in the world.

Ben throws himself into the lifestyle, including punishing farm work in temperatures of up to 40 degrees celsius.

But the presenter discovers that it’s not just the livestock Gideon has to care for - he also has a young family. Raising children in the desert brings its own challenges, from hand-washing nappies to teaching the kids vital survival skills.
