Midlothian-based scientists are pioneering research into the treatment of influenza and osteoarthritis.

Researchers at Edinburgh University’s Roslin Institute have joined forces with staff at St Andrews University and St Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Memphis, to develop a treatment against flu.

It is hoped the new development has the potential to guard against current, future and even pandemic strains of the virus, which claims up to 500,000 lives worldwide each year.

The scientists believe this preventative treatment could be used as a frontline defence before an effective flu vaccine is developed.

Meanwhile, Arthritis Research UK is funding a new study at the Roslin Institute to offer new hope for people with osteoarthritis.
