A MAYFIELD couple had a double reason to celebrate their recent Ruby Wedding Anniversary.
Sheila (62) and Alan (63) Campbell were married on March 31, 1973, at St Luke’s Church in Mayfield.
They celebrated their anniversary with friends and family, including their grandson Louie who was celebrating his ninth birthday.
Sheila grew up in Newtongrange and Alan in Gorebridge then Mayfield.
Sheila said: “I had known him since I was about 13, we grew up in the same area.
“We used to go out when we were about 15, but it didn’t amount to anything. It was a few years until we got together again. Then we met-up when we were about 20 and got married at 22.”
So what’s the secret to a long, happy marriage?
“My husband would say ‘just do as you’re told’! I suppose it’s changed since we got married. You tried to make a go of it in those days.”
The couple have two sons Alan (37) and Marc (27), and two grandchildren, Tammy (15) and Louie (9). Sheila retired last year from her job as a support worker in Newtongrange and had previously worked in administration for Midlothian Council.
Alan has been an engineer since he left school, he worked in the pits for 25 years and currently works for Edinburgh University.
