Scissor attacker avoids jail

A VIOLENT drunk who repeatedly stabbed a man on the neck with a pair of scissors has been told he is lucky not to be facing a life sentence for murder.

Alistair MacDonald was warned that two of the wounds he inflicted could easily have proved fatal if they had landed a few millimetres to the side.

MacDonald, 23, of Armadale, West Lothian, was appearing for sentence at Livingston Sheriff Court yesterday after earlier pleading guilty to assault to severe injury.He admitted attacking Calum MacIvor in a house in Bathgate in the early hours of January 1.

The court was told MacDonald remembered nothing of the incident because he had drunk so much.

Sheriff Gerald Warner sentenced MacDonald to carry out 100 hours of unpaid work and put him under social work supervision for a year.
