Service as Lady Clerk dies aged 94

A thanksgiving service will be held in Penicuik tomorrow (Thursday) to celebrate the life of Elizabeth, Lady Clerk. She died last week aged 94.

The service will take place at St James the Less Church at 2.30pm following a private funeral.

Born in Edinburgh, Lady Clerk (nee Robertson) attended Oxenfoord School, Pathhead. She maintained her links with the school for many years returning as matron and later as chairman of the board of governors.

She was a keen supporter of Marie Curie Fairmilehead, serving on their committee for many years, and of Girlguiding in Midlothian.

Lady Clerk was a member of St James the Less Church, Penicuik, and a strong supporter of the WRI and Mothers’ Union.

She married Sir John Clerk in 1944 and became the first member of the Clerk family to live permanently at Penicuik House since the fire of 1899. Lady Clerk is survived by her children Sir Robert, Lavinia, Piers and Honor. She had eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Sir John died in 2002.

Her son Sir Robert said: “I think she was very kindly regarding in and around Penicuik and people are saying some very nice things about her.”
