Worried Penicuik residents are campaigning against Midlothian Council plans to turn a former old people’s home into a homeless unit.

Locals living in Dykes Road are hoping their campaigning will raise awareness over the proposed change of use of the former Pentland House in Edinburgh Road.

Proposals are at an early stage and no planning application has been lodged.

Community councillor Alan Robertson, who has been leafleting local residents and businesses, said his efforts were to “fire a shot across the bows” to let the council know the local strength of feeling.

Council leader Owen Thompson (SNP) confirmed that the plans were “at a very early stage” with no discussion or decision having been taken formally at the council.

“The council does plan to hold public meetings and consultation,” he added.
