Sport centre bounces back for basketball

A CITY sports centre that was shut down because of funding cuts is now set to reopen as a basketball hub.

The Crags Sports Centre was closed by Edinburgh Leisure at the end of last year, with the building reverting to its owner, the city council.

Council officials now want to conclude a deal to allow the building to be operated by local basketball club Boroughmuir Blaze, with the support of Basketball Scotland.

The group beat off competition from The Bike Station and Sportsal to win the right to operate the building.

Council chiefs have recommended that a £1-a-year lease is granted, with Basketball Scotland taking over responsibility for paying the cost of repairs, rates, maintenance and insurance.

Councillors will be asked to approve the lease at a meeting tomorrow.

A dozen notes of interest were lodged by organisations that were interested in running the facility, with potential uses including football, gymnastics or even roller derby.

Under the new plans, Boroughmuir Blaze would be the principal user of the centre.
