The subsidence hit Old Dalkeith Road may be closed until spring next year, Midlothian Council has confirmed.
The A6106 at Lugton Brae, a key commuter link from Dalkeith to the capital via Sheriffhall roundabout, was shut on July 24 after cracks appeared over a 30-metre stretch of the road surface.
The closure saw a hike in the speed and volume of traffic through Lugton village, as motorists chose to avoid taking a longer diversion route via Melville Gate Road and along the B6392 and A6094.
In order to address this, a Temporary Road Closure Order was put in place at Lugton Brae on August 16. But motorists are infuriating villagers by continuing to use it.
