Stranded trio's SOS call prompts Lothian coastguard lifeboat response

A rescue team was sent out earlier on Friday to rescue three people stranded on Craigleith Island off the shore of North Berwick.

The stranded trio raised an SOS via a mobile phone around 11.30am, advising of an equipment failure on their inflatable kayak.

North Berwick RNLI Lifeboat attended and uplifted the kayakers, who were found safe and well.

Coastguard officers spoke with the trio on their return, confirming they had all the necessary safety equipment including life-jackets and a mobile phone.

"They did the absolutely right thing in calling for assistance," said a spokesperson for North Berwick RNLI Lifeboat.

"Remember, if you see someone or something you are concerned about on the shoreline, cliff, mud or on the sea, dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

"There is an alternative contact number for the Coastguard, 01333 450666 where you can pass information."
