Street traders make their pitch for Gardens location

Judgments are to be made on Friday for 12 applications to sell items including food, jewellery, art, and flowers.

The applications are for one year, although each will come with a clause that trading may have to be suspended on certain days, such as Hogmanay, on the advice of council director of city development Dave Anderson. Among the applications was one from ice-cream seller Jon Corrigan, whose family has traded on The Mound for 88 years, and another from Leora Grahame, who wants to sell jewellery.

In a letter in support of her application to sell cards and jewellery from Playfair Steps, Elizabeth Hiller wrote: “Marks & Spencer and Boots all started up from barrels. I do not wish to become M&S, but my one-year Mound licence gives me an income.”
