Television - One to watch: The Beatles’ Please Please Me (BBC Four, Friday, February 15, 9pm)

Here’s a sobering fact for Beatlemaniacs - February 11 is the 50th anniversary of the recording of the Beatles’ debut album Please Please Me.

And not just the anniversary of the start of the recording sessions either - the Fab Four ploughed through the whole thing in just 12 hours.

To mark the occasion, a group of artists, rumoured to include Joss Stone, Blur’s Graham Coxon, and Simply Red frontman Mick Hucknall are gathering together at the iconic Abbey Road Studios in an attempt to record the 11 songs in the same timescale (and if you’re about to point out there are 14 tracks on Please Please Me, bear in mind some of them were singles which had already been put to vinyl).

Presenter Stuart Maconie is there to see the results, while engineer Richard Langham and Beatles’ press officer Tony Barrow should give us an insight into how the proceedings compare to working with the Mop Tops.
