Tory leader brandishes News at Salmond

Scottish Tory leader Ruth Davidson brandished a copy of the Evening News at First Minister’s Questions as she challenged Alex Salmond over life sentence prisoners having minimum jail terms reduced.

She cited the paper’s front-page story about paedophile James Rennie – jailed for molesting a three-month-old baby – who won the right to be considered for parole after eight and a half years instead of the original 13 years.

Ms Davidson said: “Life should mean life.”

Mr Salmond said legislation soon to be brought forward would stop future cases arising where the punishment part of the sentence is reduced on appeal.

But he warned that the legislation could not apply retrospectively.
