Transport plans given public airing

The city council has launched a consultation phase to help shape a blueprint for the traffic network for the next five years.

Plans being considered by transport chiefs could lead to 40mph zones being axed.

Around 25 main roads would be reduced to 30mph in a bid to make them safer for pedestrians and cyclists, with streets near schools being shut during rush hours.

Low emission zones that penalise polluting vehicles could also be introduced as a deterrent on main routes such Queensferry Road and St John’s Road, where nitrogen dioxide levels are high.

The introduction of Sunday parking charges is another potential plan open to public comment.

Lesley Hinds, the city’s transport leader, said: “We want to hear what residents and businesses in Edinburgh think about the transport
issues in this consultation.”
